Baby “E” is not your typical baby. For starters, her incredible mom braved a home birth, a feat that absolutely terrifies me. The delivery went smoothly and everything was fine until the one week checkup. Her pulse oxygen wasn’t within the normal range and she was sent to the ER. Upon arriving at the ER, nurses swarmed her, poking and prodding. The pediatrician suspected a heart murmur and transferred baby “E”, by helicopter, up to Children’s Hospital. The doctor told “E’s” parents their baby girl had a life-threatening heart defect, Transposition of the Great Arteries, that required surgery. Fortunately the surgery went well and the family is back at home, recuperating from an exhausting past few weeks.
Needless to say, I was thrilled when “E’s” mom asked me to photograph her adorable wee one! You’d never guess this sweet girl had recently undergone open heart surgery. She was so mellow throughout the entire session! I have a special place in my heart for Wee Ones sessions. Babies are such an incredible combination of innocence and resilience. Their parents set aside everything else in their lives to ensure their babies feel save and loved. It’s beautiful to be part of that experience.
